Watch Types

Automatic

Valued for their longevity, automatic or self-winding watches use spring tension to drive their components. These watches are wound by the energy from the natural movement of the watch on a wrist, or by manually winding the watch using the crown. These watches do not use a battery. A fully wound automatic watch will run for approximately 38-50 hours, while some more sophisticated models will run for several weeks.

Quartz

A quartz watch runs by using a battery in conjunction with a quartz crystal. These watches are durable, capable of keeping extremely accurate time, and may be able to run non-stop for years without a battery change.

Solar

These long-lasting watches are a type of quartz watch. The difference is that solar watches can charge their battery using energy derived from sunlight. These watches can last many years without changing the battery or servicing the watch.

Chronograph

Appreciated for their added features, chronograph watches have sub-dials on the main dial for recording milliseconds, seconds, minutes and even hour intervals. Push buttons found on the side of the case act as a stopwatch, and can be used to start, stop, and reset the timer functions.

Smart Watches

A smart watch does far more than just tell time, it is a digital device that provides you with additional tools, including calendars, GPS navigation, phone features, and messaging functions. For fitness, there are smart watches that will track your steps, running or cycling distance, heart rate, and calories, and even monitor your sleep patterns. Some smart watches function on their own, and some require downloading of an app to your smartphone, so you can sync the two devices.

Watch Terminology

Bezel

A bezel is the ring around the watch face that holds the crystal in place. Bezels can be stationary or rotational. A rotating bezel is most often used for measuring increments of time, which is a common feature on dive watches.

Clasp

Clasp refers to the type of closure used on the bracelet or band of a watch, to secure the watch to the wrist. There are numerous types of clasps used for watch bands, and most fall into one of two categories, buckles or deployment. Buckles are generally reserved for straps made of material like leather or plastic, and deployment clasps are most often found on metal watches.

Case

The case houses the dial and movement of a watch, as well as other internal components. Watch cases come in numerous sizes, shapes and styles. As a general rule, the larger the case size, the bigger the watch will look on your wrist.

Crown

The crown is a grooved knob found on the outside of the watch case. It controls the hands, and date when applicable, and can be used for manual winding and stopping on most automatic watches.

Crystal

Crystal is the glass that protects the face of a watch. The two most common types of crystal are sapphire and mineral. Sapphire crystal, both synthetic and natural, is valued for being incredibly strong and scratch-resistant. It is one of the strongest materials on earth, and is nearly impossible to scratch. It is the most desired crystal for watches. Mineral crystal is a standard glass that has been specially treated, with heat or chemicals, to make it stronger and more resistant to cracks and minor scratches.

Dial

The dial, or clock face, of a watch displays the time. Most traditional watches have hands and hour markers, while digital watches usually have a digital numeric display.

Luminous

Luminous or luminescence, refers to a glowing phosphorescent material that makes a watch usable in the dark. Lume is typically painted onto the hands, hour markers, and dials of a watch to make it easier to read. Many dive watches have luminous characteristics.

Movement

A watch’s movement is the interior mechanism that makes it operate. Movement powers all essential functions, including time, chronograph, calendars, and multiple time zones. Often referred to as caliber, most types of movement can be categorized as either Automatic or Quartz. Automatic is a self-winding movement that winds the mainspring of the watch using the energy derived from the natural motion of the wrist. Quartz is a basic battery-powered movement.

Subdial

A subdial, or auxiliary dial, is a small dial located on the clock face. A subdial is used to display additional information, like the month, day of the week, secondary time zones, moon phases, or elapsed seconds.

Water Resistance

Displayed on the face or caseback of the watch, the water resistance is a guideline for how well a watch is protected against water. Water Resistance is generally measured in feet, meters, and atmospheres. Watches rated to a depth of 100 meters (328 feet) can be safe to wear while swimming. Watches rated to a depth of 200+ meters (656 feet) can be safe to wear for recreational diving.

Watch Sizing

The case of a watch is measured from top to bottom in millimeters. This measurement is considered the most important factor in determining fit. As a general rule, the larger the case size, the bigger the watch will look on your wrist. To help guide you in choosing the case size that works best for you, we’ve provided some general measurements. Sizing is all about comfort and proportion, but in the end, it may simply come down to a style preference.

To ensure a watch fits properly, you’ll also need to know the circumference of your wrist. You can get an accurate measurement by placing a tape measure around the area of your wrist that you would normally wear a bracelet or watch. Take into consideration whether you prefer a snug or loose fit. Note that the bracelet, or band, length in combination with the case size will be the maximum circumference a watch will fit.

Men’s Watches

The approximate size of a standard men’s watch case ranges from 38-40mm. The case on a men’s sports watch is a bit larger, ranging from 42-44mm, and an oversized watch case ranges from 44-46mm.

Women’s Watches

The approximate size of a standard women’s watch case ranges from 26-29mm. Larger cases for women’s watches tend to range from 30-39mm, and an oversized case is anything 40mm and above.

Watch Care

With proper care, a quality timepiece can last for years, even decades. By following a few basic guidelines, you can easily maintain both the beauty and function of your watch.

Keep your watch away from dust and dirt, which can settle into the creases of your watch. Avoid all harsh chemicals and cleaning supplies such as bleach and ammonia. Avoid direct exposure to fragrances, lotions, and hair spray. Keep your watch at a safe distance from magnets, which can cause serious damage. This includes handbags with magnetic closures, magnetic jewelry, x-ray machines, and other various items.

Avoid extended exposure to direct sunlight, extreme heat or humidity, or sudden temperature changes. Do not wear your watch in a shower, pool, hot tub, or sauna. Any of these circumstances may cause damage to your watch, including rusting, fading, or failure of essential functions.

No matter what type of watch you have, it’s always best to avoid water exposure whenever possible. Rubber seals on watches can break down from frequent contact with water, and if your watch has a leather band, water will damage that as well. It’s important to understand your watch’s level of water resistance—remember, water resistance does not mean waterproof. If your watch is waterproof to a certain depth, know that number and do not exceed it.

Watch Cleaning

Watches can be safely cleaned by gently wiping the case and bracelet with a soft cotton cloth. Never submerge your watch in water. Keep the crown of your watch closed. Do not open your watch for any reason. If you feel your watch needs repair or maintenance, take it to a jeweler. Store your watch in a safe dry place. If you have an automatic watch, it’s best to store them inside a watch winder.
